Abstract
Advancements in fiber optic communication will require development and demonstration of new systems for increasing optical interconnect (server-to-server) data rate capacity in data center and high performance computing applications. This research will overview the main impairments of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) based links, noise analysis of VCSELs and the impact of fiber on noise, advanced modulation formats (PAM-4), shortwave division multiplexing (SWDM), optical power penalties associated with faster line rates, transmitter equalization, and few tap transmitter pulse shaping, for realizing these new systems.
