Abstract
Although all cockpits are currently equipped with visual displays that provide accurate information about the attitude of the aircraft, spatial disorientation continues to be one of the leading causes of aviation accidents. In this paper, we describe the design of an audio display that modifies the acoustic properties of an arbtrary audio input signal (i.e., pilot-selected music) to provide the pilot with supplementary information about the current attitude of the aircraft. Details are provided about how and why the cues were selected, and how they were implemented in a real-time audio system in the aircraft. Results are also provided from laboratory and flight tests that were used to evaluate the performance of the system.
