    Routes to Chiral Purity Involving Crystallization

    Chiral purity has become an increasingly important characteristic of many specialty chemicals, especially pharmaceuticals. Manufacturers seeking chiral purity have two choices: (1) utilize syntheses that directly yield such purity or (2) separate and purify a desired stereoisomer from a mixture containing two or more isomers. This presentation will highlight the use of crystallization in meeting the challenges of such separations. Particular emphasis will be given to the role of nucleation in determining the identity of the species produced and to controlling system conditions so that nucleation and growth mechanisms may be manipulated to influence the process outcome.

    Energy and Sustainability: Context, Challenges, Opportunities

    Rational economic growth in national economies is fed by aspirations for an improved standard of living, and such growth often relies on exploitation of natural resources. Industrial development in the 21st century raises challenges that are unlikely to be met with currently available technologies, especially if boundary conditions associated with the global environment are imposed. It is therefore essential that we accelerate research leading to new methodologies for utilizing fossil fuels, identifying and developing new or alternative sources of energy, and improving the way natural resources are integrated into the goods and services essential for economic development. In addition to research and development, it is equally important that we educate the global community on wise use of such resources and push for acceptance of policies based on sound science and technology. This presentation will consider how providing and using energy influence sustainable growth, and identify challenges and opportunities for research and development in the core competencies of the chemical engineering domain.

    Perspectives on Energy, Resources, and Sustainability

    National economies exhibit a strong linkage to the availability of affordable energy. Their growth usually is fed by aspirations for an improved standard of living, and it often relies on exploitation of natural resources. The linkage between global climate change and combustion of fossil fuels may be controversial, but the potential of environmental consequences sets an important boundary condition on future courses of action. It is therefore essential that we accelerate research leading to new methodologies for utilizing fossil fuels, identifying and developing new or alternative sources of energy, and improving the way natural resources are integrated into the goods and services essential for economic development. Displacement of non-renewable resources with those that can be renewed is desired, but the full impact of such a change is not clear. In this presentation, the magnitude of the demand for energy will be interpreted in terms of available resources and sustainability. Risks associated with various courses of action to meet that demand will be described.
