dc.description.abstract John Curtis Staton, Kappa Sigma Electrical Engineering "John" Atlanta, Georgia The brilliancy of John Staton cannot be kept within the boy. He got a good start in the freshman class, and has not let the professors rest since he learned to ask them things that they knew nothing about. "To take Hearst s place in the newspaper world." Class of 1924 Vice-President, Coca-Cola Company Staton worked for Coca-Cola from 1924 until his retirement in 1968. He designed the first Coca-Cola cooler and developed its first portable fountain dispenser. While a Coke man he spent 18 years abroad in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Mexico. Born June 9, 1903 in Atlanta, the son of John Curtis Staton and Bivien Hammond Staton. He graduated from the old Boys High School and received a degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech, where he lettered on football, basketball, track and swimming. He received an LLB degree from Atlanta Law School. He rose to vice president in charge of manufacturing for Coke and later served as staff vice president and assistant to the president. He was former president of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association, member of the Tech board of trustees and former co-chairman of the joint recipients of the Georgia Tech Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1966. Staton served on the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, participating in studies of other cities transit systems and helping plan the MARTA system. In 1956 he stressed Atlanta s need for an international airport and a navigable channel in the Chattahoochee River from Atlanta to the Gulf of Mexico via the Apalachicola River to develop the city into a greater center of world trade. He also believed Atlanta could become one of the greatest cities in the hemisphere and that such a development would also further world peace.(?) Staton was a former president of the Atlanta Area Council of the Boys Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver award in 1957 and the Silver Antelope in 1963. He was an emeritus trustee of Lovett School and former president of Atlanta Rotary Club. He was a member of the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, Capital City Club and Piedmont Driving Club.
