dc.description.abstract David Melville Smith Head math Dept Great friend, Athletics Taught for 46 years (41 on the Tech campus) from Ft. Worth Texas to Atlanta. Forced to retire at age 70 in 1954 due to state law. Native of Nashville, Tennessee, received his bachelor s and masters from Vanderbilt University and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Started watching over students in 1913, when he was a fraternity brother of W.A. Alexander and a mathematical member of the faculty. Famed for helping athletes (football players) make the academic cut to continue playing for Georgia Tech. Head of math department from 1934 to 1950 -- retired because of his age. Member of the American Mathematical Society (1938 as vice-chair of the southeastern section), Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, the Georgia Academy of Science and Sigma Xi. Died in 1962 at age 78.
