[00:00:25] >> We're here to dedicate and to celebrate Saturn in we're going to dedicate and rename the school of mechanical engineering and celebrate the accomplishments and successes of the life of a man who had the wisdom to choose mechanical engineering as his discipline has been very supportive of Georgia Tech over many years. [00:00:51] The next person I'd like to introduce is Dr Henry Bourne who is vice president of academic affairs at Georgia Tech and he's going to talk about the history of mechanically like you John. Just what Dr Light is and John. It's a great pleasure for me to protest a might miss Sarah mony honoring one of the right benefactors of Georgia Tech was to join one group today for the first time in Georgia Tech's hundred year history. [00:01:20] We are naming an academic unit after someone whose contributions to the Institute and the school was sufficiently significant but this unique recognition out of there is a burden which we all gladly assume all attack join me for a new effort to make an already distinguished school even more distinguished and worthy of the name that it by a lot us ceremonious future oriented and I think most of what Rove has as much confidence in the future of this coup. [00:01:49] As we do this wonder of school has a whole hundred years span of history. It may surprise you. Since mechanical engineering was a first degree intact but in one thousand eighty eight it was still trying to fill the first profile. So a ship in mechanical engineering to which they had not been a single applicant from the south and then to stain quickly added all those received from them all they really went frown on us. [00:02:17] We're going to Michigan State the prawn the current director John Brighton in that same year of eight hundred eighty eight an attempt was made to persuade the Navy to assign a naval officer. Well this professorship promising to supplement his salary by the mighty sum of one hundred dollars a year the record is Marquis as to why I did not accept the appointment. [00:02:43] John Coon was invited to shortly thereafter and for the next four years shape mechanical engine tech he had expressed some excuse things about accepting the appointment because he's teaching methods were somewhat off the box. The response was if we were not hiring a Sunday school teacher later in the record it stated that he was known for tossing a steam gauge on the flying muscles that students who does otherwise irritated him with the size of steam gauges in those days the phrase somewhat on all the dots seems a rather mild description. [00:03:19] I'll leave most to wonder do admit or deny steam gauge of the flying muscle mechanical engineering remained a shop oriented utilitarian program until then I forties then but grand the gradual evolution into the modern school which we have today. Early in this period the president of the Institute was complaining about the failure of state and local authorities to give us the promised aid at the same time mechanical engineering received a fifty thousand dollars gift from the federal government. [00:03:52] Something's changed and some things are eternal the first E.M.'s was authorized in one thousand nine hundred two a doctoral program was added in one thousand nine hundred eighty six. One thousand nine hundred forty nine and the Department of mechanical engineering officially became the school of mechanical engineering will its own director and administrative staff in one thousand nine hundred four the Nuclear Engineering and Health Physics programs were placed on the administration of the school a mechanical engineering this my you designed to strike in the resources of all three programs and increase collaboration new plant in engineering school. [00:04:27] Addison tech in one nine hundred sixty two first offering only graduate degrees and in one thousand seven hundred two adding a back like program as well as a result of this merger of the school in occupied as all a part of several buildings including the cone building behind me ten building space science and technology buildings one three cherry amas and building in the Newcrest arts related research is also carried out in bunker Henry and the old civil engineering building in comparison to the twenty eight students who comprise the first graduating class school mechanical engineering last year. [00:05:02] Graduated two hundred ninety five undergraduates and ninety four graduates and replacing John say look he has now faculty of fifty four mechanical engineering Nuclear Engineering and health physics professor Lester wonder if you're inheriting a school with a fascinating past and a great future find a story. Ladies and gentleman seems like you and I have to stop meeting like this. [00:05:40] We've been together several times lately is about a year ago we shared a platform to dedicate the Karajan Irene with the president over on the west side of the campus many of you were there. Predication and it was inside. Great. Carmen responded so eloquently that he walked back to his chair and left his cane hanging on the side of the lecture. [00:06:10] I hope will inspire him today to do that again then a couple weeks ago he had a birthday and idea birthday and that was a big to do around the Emory campus a lot of us were there some of the band were there. He rolled up and the rambling rack Carlow was supposed to be an ecumenical bear with the president the foreign the deuce and getting equal time to thank your good it for what he has done for their particular institution and it was on that occasion that I made the first public mention that we were going to name the school of mechanical engineering. [00:06:52] I guess and a very real sense just a mechanical engineering here a good while the guard what it was is below the study it was his source again full employment for quite a number of years. You can read about the course of his career and the credit program. [00:07:13] Yes that you do so he entered Georgia Tech N nine hundred thirteen. Over in the student center today we have a new crop of freshman and greeted them this morning and told them about the fact that someone else made it start here too in mechanical engineering and many of them were doing a little earlier and thirteen now Carr says many of the engineering at a wide ranging career is departing from the expect practice of the profession. [00:07:45] George look at the debt too but in accumulated a total of his endeavors and activities there is a fine success story and he has been generous in sharing his success with Georgia Tech and other educational in Tucson. In fact he has become Georgia Tech's greatest benefactor. I supported us in the direction there's been across the board not limited to mechanical engineering. [00:08:13] Yet we wanted to identify his name is something in the ongoing operations of the in the a lot of buildings named for various people and we wanted to do something unique for both Georgia Tech and the university system in naming an academic school. So it's my pleasure to Clara today naming Mr George is going to bring department. [00:08:43] George of The Wonder of the mechanical engineering and in a moment I'll step down and they I'll sign the player that the star of the moment that is my my pleasure. My son going to do that then I'll come back and we will hear from George but I think there is also a certificate guard. [00:09:44] You know if you can Yemeni room on your wall line or something. Thank you. I'm great Sunday ever thank you Sanjay. These ceremonies are really the something here with my name on a mechanical and I go right. And I'm very proud. It has been seventy three years since I was in school here seemed incredible surprising when I remember my state. [00:10:37] You had classes for four hours every morning six days a week and in the afternoon from one to five machine jobs would bites me mechanical drawing I understand the machine shop and would shop on not no longer require. And at the brightness shop have been converted into foundry practice. [00:11:15] I had to learn the founder of been a hard voice. I would tend to cut a good business. We had three factories each with a foundry and a plant shop. I had to learn about mow right and killed all over the ground ribs made all they can think of used in the cotton gin machinery they were cast on my training here in the wood shop helped me a lot. [00:12:02] In dealing with the pattern. I flow with my dentist and the time the machinery of been completely redesigned again I had eight hours each driving kid and I am every day has one hundred forty one sixty nine hidden diameter and I forget it can produce fifty cottonmouth at quite a record getting a little ahead of myself when I finished I had a job with Atlantic Graffman in the engineering department late on our friend for to the think engine department and made time stated all of the machine. [00:13:08] Grow presses lays milling within the ruling male lead our friend Roger the engineering department of Atlantic go out of breath after about two years he painted a refund for the maintenance of the boiler and engine in thirty four. I plant. Located in Gardner Alabama Tennessee and prior to the ball of the heart of Q and most of the end guns were calling for the high and low pressure cylinder the low pressure center of about twice the diameter of the high prices up. [00:14:03] From Atlanta guy come May I went into the merc right Minister and I didn't want to shake. Because in my training here I take why again viable as I'm sure it will be for all I can arrange in a few here now and if you like that it before I head down. [00:14:30] I would like to give you this. OK table to go to that I can call him. Like.
