And we really appreciate that and due to the rule capacity we had to close our sign up letter year last Saturday. So next time we'll try to reserve a bigger. And a sorry for those who has to stand there. Well Yet this is our second a year of the global media festival in the last year we invited the Chinese independent filmmaker Mr wants. On and showed his to recent a film class to China and we discussed are those the environmental and social issues related to the theme of assistant ability in this year we're trying to do something different focused on the political sustainability in China. As you may know the lack of speech free speech is the Saturday. Reality in China in the particularly now it's under. Present and she. Etiology called control into Internet censorship or has being much tightened. So take a very recent example after the C.C.P. announced to abolish term limits on the presidency originally the presidency is ten year limit but now they abolished that probably you heard by the news right. The now Spencer was made to. AIDS February twenty eighth and it seems then the words like a dumb T. boarded the plane while censored on the way for the Chinese. Of Twitter because it a sounds like a dumb T. or Santa that's wrong. And that there are many many other examples of the new censored or sent sensitive awards so I hope this event is a timely discussion on political system stability or instability and how the Chinese artist. Responded to the rich and the political censorship in the crate you away. So today it's my great pleasure to introduce Michelle quite misleading. The Chinese artist who has to struggle in the internet since almost every day you can read. A brief bio here we prepared a short video presentation to introduce the artist artwork my student. Helped. Make the video. And made a video exclusively for the event. So today the world premier. Please enjoy. What he's done to China. I don't really. Hear. You. Are Really. So many times. Contemporary trying particularly. You. Know. If I wasn't around. Here and. My. British. Far. Right. Are all. Pretty well call home. But there was that and some of those are in Asian agreement. So where are you right and this one. Was the right Chris I heard. And there. Was No. This strategy is perhaps backwards and I did point out that knowledge for fictional creature grasslands which was our on line early two thousand I. Need this is the worst is written in three innocuous transferred orally it's pronunciation tower which is identical except to. A pretty fresh state anything in it and he ate a lot at the time. The leading figure in this state internet censorship is the con artist we shall back west coming I have a chance to culture the US for a long time in my own thoughts we shall all for education and interest but she went on to purchase a computer she has lied and said a lot is it in two thousand and six hundred sixteen other names flowers and just how much time and I would say he was he looked intently Chinas our clocks. Lead them from his transformative power along a new knowledge. For a grasp of time so we first order of the blogosphere is the only area with the outside world to learn. What I would call. The middle of his blog walk down a little picture with. Me on. And I robbers or hold on. Thank you his strong opinions on certain subjects we hope he's really. Shocking to me. But he is sitting in our house just to he consistently says John I have more to say boxing drugs although you know this is only what needs to happen I feel it means when it's still beating and all of us a strong picture will I be all over the world to parents it's OK now the national interest and it is offering to be original the better miles per. Hour Congress reason we should this period ask the character didn't it teach contemporary twenty years. In the discourtesy between what is expected and what is at. Least I have no interest running on the best constant cards in the English silence while we Chinese Hans and. There are stylists social and political news for us usually teach something that God and competent response how he missed initially the serious social and political hierarchy least robotics is alive branch of local national international issues because really it's. All these cartoons of who's goes who does not believe he's the White House and then says come on the son of a person's story really. Is the more the first heard of the mines one hundred. Zillion officers pulling. Their cars here boards all go. Off on our major road. If you don't know this and this you know. This first of all intrigue in any form your own DAVID Of the hundreds of thousands are made by these folks here. Trying that is the drug of those. In the burbs and prayers. Were wearing and they're really free or. Cheap the freedom to him was. A reverse this is a very. Order but for those watching this one is also really used to bury this guy on the brand name. Which is about how. The proxy servers the Chinese citizens used to climb over. And that their very words allowed if I didn't remove the shows now or for the other skin or a piece of. Each issue. In the right one last in Iraq the shock for you because he's under the protection of the gold in your reference to going to shield Roger from trying to blow the clock because. I misinterpreted I said slump over to us and now we published a comic a long title Louella to John and so on net and stop our elite he was a child he's hospitalized we want fictional characters that is created by man downtowns signature in response to use. One of these comics do you think police and thousands and hundreds invented the word tests which generally nice characteristic in the party scene we saw a chance to work for us shockwave. Which seems to glow suspect change your first six because it can also be construed as very right in front. With the right humor I'm just the person who the sense of achievement built exists and that's kind of the anger in me that much as it is cause. It's taking down the lives teaching passion. Leith even bigger Cyrus whether you're in the creek you find there's was rather this adverse reaction to the initiation of those who revise. And are not just those reforms that will work on trying. For example the ending for The Wall or came in the opera or hard thing or the there will be one mile. And the first row of the open the bar for a shot which means he will be mobbed by the simple vertical line this proposal will be your response neutron versus the virtual community and more than any recent on the cleverness of the device Shari followed the proposal while the poor people of new characters and immediately goes on his blog about. The unity of the. Graphic is crucial for the word good. It is even certain that this character represents the fever. Going on in the main central committee of the Communist Party where she's a party we're going to. Play this major there's very little media that's the Asian young it's sort of competition dot com John that combines the mission and the first for me with the final roster. Of the not illegitimate syllable of the phone off Mars night system it's very similar to this for the young people. This exact. In fact she used to see him back which used to represent the CIA I'm scared Chinese this is transforming he translated from lawyer prince of Egypt for example son by the way past and son which translates to the great god of the Three Rivers became silent John Paston shall the great god repeat. The next chapter stands for him out. Fifty cents a word of it to satirize is that he was hired to raise your arm stashing osses the going rate for well it turns pointless fifty cents or goes in our bank this is the office it is hard to distinguish here. Or to my own investments. This is yours to represent. Which means the most. Leverage with which we're trying and there were Muses who were hired where forced the militia to be produced as well as many uses for land but. The lives of these forced the machines usually belonged to someone who came would translate to all the really big people who used to enjoy over this guy's story was trying have been rather tears in the morning he was his. English is so good no word well I should say you were with or he would were transferred first it was coined by the playoffs it is and. We probably are really used to the devil pretty and smile was the. Response to satirise a little girl's shoulder and increasing actually on her knee and keep this state in the family and the list and I'm certain. It's not the are published where people comment on the first stimulus that has become the biggest and the titles here's what you are watching STATE The first thing all contain her that she's feeling on a grid and second panel in her wall in red intrudes into the frame and knocks on the editor. In the third you know that yard has been rendered world which is learning and we're firing we're all enemies which is the last thought which means gratitude which your Sunday our only vicious dog a top side healer Chinese very good artist who lives as the conference symbols of free powers pretty easily read the state hour and walk into the giant symbol of power speaking almost about who lives and numerous times I'm explosion in the real estate involvement in temporary. Recently in two thousand seen leaving the church in total all says were equally little but in the single friend we see here character who's the soul and sharing the need of this character as a whole is simply the she just isn't enough friend so little day as ours is. It is obvious that this new character plays with her job I ever listened to in terrorist groups with a child. To Charlie Sheen's to true story arc he has recently become one of the trailers use to just pierce China's rich and powerful family's needs John suggests that since all jars had said credit there is a nominal cost to do is not to brag but to just leave us however and jar into Diana's shows he had probably asked which can mean target as a sign of things in crafts here aren't consistent interesting questions where. In truth my brain is embedded in the wrong tree simultaneously so. You're in. For an interview when you think there's only hope you're wrong and the final result OK. So. You're expressed the medicine. You were. Using the right wasn't sure very precisely what it was all. Of. These are all. Sort of very few modern baby so if. You know what. I think I make what's what's the. First thing. Was so you got everyone. Well. I mean the United States well so to say it's not make Well when I was little. Cannot tell where it is you said what she make will and I have no idea how to get there how other than you think. He said These don't like it don't eat you want both you know what the thing to the. Possible to make Will Later someone told me you dig a hole in the ground and keep digging into the end of the world and then pop up and I will be the United States but as it was it's all but of course this time I travel on a plane a missile Well that's it the shelling by day quotes ya so well that's right I come from the other side of the planet China well so you know some twenty three Tong. China is a country where the cost of survival is very high. Into the wait you up into the wall of the character on the left is great which means expensive and honorable and the character on the right is country weasel most of the week when the. Thought that the title will stop. Jones how important this and why is it caught quick war it means. It means that you have to pay a fairly high price to live an ordinary and normal life in China. His son Tom young when. I am a cartoonist but the thing I'm best at is to create art with characters you meet. Because the Chinese characters are pictographic you can hand. Each character are indeed a picture of what you will call songs old school scene that when this is. Not you know that with what I combine different words to create new characters to express my political opinions so. As we all know the power of the party in power in China is the Chinese Communist Party so that. Will be done so the core party is the central committee of the party so this is the European states and young we have party on the left Central Committee on the right. So younger will CDATA change the. The party. Huge amount of power so into the sea so you thought that's. On the left we have a promotion on the right we have power and authority and combine them together it's totalitarian regime. Thomas and. They won and the party even wants to take over control of the universe so I mean they see what you're going to see so. On the left it's supervising Contro on the right it's universe you're used to the leader of the challenge so you could listen when the sun's in. Who's at home it seems the party has such a strong presence of power in China and many Chinese came to believe that the party is there to protect them so you see and sometimes it's a woman and she could be done and that's why even though we don't have the habit of praying before a meal is we actually can thank the country instead. So that's. Been what's Yahtzee media deep and this is the discrepancy of power between an ordinary Chinese and the state so I mean to the wall. On the left we have country and on the right we have home. Yellow Yat be what John yok wants the whole project in so you know. As we can see when the family was crushed by the state all that is left is graves. Of Fun moved east well drawn means grave and it's. With the top move into a different place what's the other. Way in that. This the power of the state is overwhelming enough to destroy any ordinary Chinese family what you see couples in their own going and I am I'm on I am one of the ordinary Chinese. Yeah a cartoonist or maybe some of those yet I've never attended college What's this done up on in this year so. All I have is eight years of education and then I dropped out even when you went to the what you had. Lost. Because I believe all the education system is to produce screws for the larger machine of the country just as out that you made a screw like that will pull you totally down the last I don't want to be one of those groups where you know. I didn't even attend and attend any art college so you might see what soil come to us on it but needless to what says that by far everything that I learned I use at work I taught myself and she said What do you mean that's the whole Actually when I was at school I was a good student when I see you when could. I was also the class representative of the Chinese Kleis will see what I'm going to go to. The if that made sense because it's a very Chinese thing. You will simply when. I have been very sensitive to words and characters yes you want what you know what. Teacher actually like me a lot although I often missed the deadline for turning into a turn and you know what to do it but I caught them because all my exercise books were used for drawing those who will use how will you be eliciting but I'm pretty sure that I don't want to be one. Of the main sit down and hope that even if even if it means I'm one of good quality so you will have to teach you a lot and that's why I doubt that she of eight you know you could teach. Young. So when that woman quit Well it seems there is one word that is crucial to every Chinese which happens to be the word that I have never mastered once when she says it's what Toyota mean he says it is a word that is unique to Chinese culture so yes in that you would see that you go to the salon although you can find it and English dictionary once enough so it. Will be cool. But that's a woman who we think. Will win but just like any ordinary Chinese can drink Coca-Cola but that doesn't mean he or she is fully aware of the American culture behind it so you make when you need somebody else so that's why and my be difficult for Americans to truly understand the word when she you know it was a playfield to eat I'd say that one seat so you would send us yourself and billions of hope what the so what the hell. Because the Chinese society as primarily built on going she I lived a pretty depressing life after I left school didn't seem quite used to the wealth lost in a city. Who didn't want. That yet until the day I found Internet Well he says someone's got to get this is out there this is how I was feeling the first time I was surfing on the Internet. What if I sense you want you as you put it but soon I realized something is wrong here. Was So Ho since you could show you what I was actually on is more like an internet you know you know we see a lot so what the because there are a few websites that that I can never have access to will see in the instant Obama look on a suit will. This is you know well I am connected to the internet but I didn't actually gain any real freedom Well what do you call a good deal you don't chop what sits in between me and the international Internet is a war. For the time when I saw its use it prominent so that. For most of the Chinese it doesn't really matter you and Thomas you know that. Those states are thoughts. Because all the online services that they need in their life are actually available inside the wall now when it's a window. That's why and not many Chinese have thought about pushing down the wall. That's when so many of them don't even realize the existence of this war tunnel was C.E.O. with again but I am the one who yearn for freedom one seems so that's. The. Sun I understand that the war not only blocks websites as it says yeah but also blocks the freedom of thoughts to think jewel girl son and told she OK so here we have the character means think and here by replacing parts of it this is replaced by parts of the wall and in a meadow you have the delete button and on the right you have bars. Now you say. So about ten years ago I was the one who didn't want that so you. Know wait. Wait who is the highest official in charge of Chinese Internet once said. Maybe you'll want to listen so. Yell at them that China does not have online censorship and the netizens of China are free what you don't see but what suits you yeah I don't think that is the reality you see what moderates what deep in that sense of fun and here comes the first political sarcasm cartoon that I ever drawn five years I want a good book up with something and it was published on the blog today or so since it was only let you go. And from that moment on I became a political cartoonist. Decided to. Sit in this is you know and then it's a story of ten years long. You walk on and take. Up will still face you. I would say so I just dug my way out of from the other side of the planet Just wait a second it's flying from the other side of the planet so what's it until it hits you all so I would just tell you a couple of the story I mean the incident will do you know what the B.L.O. a lot seat so when you get the what people could. See as two thousand and seven I registered for an entire independent website and became an independent blogger and quite well what then put a couple copacetic lines in I won a prize I won the champion of one of the competition among bloggers I said it's M.P.C. that I post and. The prize for the winner is the macro approach well. This is what the. You when I tell you now says I. Just say yes. The old computer that I was working on is a second hand of mine and it only is worth a thousand and two on which roughly one hundred fifty dollars. I put the and the people what I saw to D.C. and you can imagine how much that map book surprises me. On someone you don't see once you. Win one month by the turn that in two thousand and eight one of the Web portal net do use one of the Web portal in China net invited me to become their cartoon columnist I used to go to see one both. Of them since there are severe restrictions on how the news were reported in China so you see even stop interrupting look totally and. You learned that you thought so it is common fact the comment section that turned out to be a great platform for netizens to express their opinions while most even some of the people in the yellin thought. The comment section is like the underground pipes of the true news rhetoric. I seem to be in. Chunks. And they collectively came up with a couple several fictional characters come in if I miss it you. Why you don't use up one of them as if you're a craft you cut some fool with a pool yet one of them is a civil servant. So what that's holding it and one of them is a really poor guy. Well but you see I see that again will what's home my point and will I breathe in our brief life into them by making cartoon stories about. Conceit you're looking at a scene. And that's how. My client and I and I. And I create my artwork based on the most trending news I mean sometimes when. It's a woman will this book is published in two thousand and nine by Hong Kong Chinese university and it is called Fierce bloggers of China it's open sort of what you mean that's what the editor is a well known author Chen go. And that's what he is the author of a well known book the earthquake of tongues so when. You pull cook on this book introduced the public to a handful of well known bloggers at the time that's you know it's so it's yeah. Yeah you'll see it's all some of them are writers some of them are intellectually and some of them are artists one thousand citizens. That I was living at a very small town say good in the book or some in. The city that you know but I have a big voice through the instruments of cartoons. In the same year I was also invited to the mainstream media picking news will take us human mind planets and nine I set up a column but you could get so you. Still beat but it was shut down within just one month due to this sarcastic piece so. Here's the background story that's it's all done. So you can see that by. And what I think this is. Who is in charge of the counterparts of F.D.A. in China in two thousand. Nine stepped down due to an incident of poisonous baby formula or so yes it's not self doubt some of those who don't will handle you know the sun Some are the substitute for protein melamine actually would cause kidney stones a mom babies. To see get them yes although the toads and those who volunteered to investigate this event without government's approval were jail that's the only means you'll in so the total of the school after stepping down in two thousand and nine a year later this official was reassigned and this is solved on the council and. And he was in charge of. Illegal publication and I've seen it had an eating the it would. Be. Actually for he was in charge of the Commission Against of sanity and. Giving him guns. OK Things two thousand and ten my blog was blocked. It's only intended so that some to a B. Chung So C.N.N.. The Chinese caught it being great firewall it which means there is a risk tightening a restriction on your freedom of speech seemed to be friends with the will could you know. I was there and an NG as there is an increasing number of blogs that are being shut down in the. Space left for freedom of speech is actually shrinking hold I Well that will be a dead walk when the summit and that's why I moved most of my artwork to Twitter to what I saw it's equally go you didn't see all of that the fun for me it is a place of freedom of speech yes. It's also a refugee camp for the night is and so with all means I saw. YELLIN sense there are many Chinese netizens coming to Twitter and evading the censorship but what's in full that you know isn't how so it's in this whole deal. Will. Be done now summits every time when the policy is tightening up Chinese netizens will flock to Twitter to express their opinions to someone be young just like refugees. Peter the woman I saw even. Twitter means escape which actually sounds fanatically to escape in China. Once it made you know your lunch was you know what just inside she she Bowie. But they're still there or worse that would touch on the nerve of this answering machine. The times it seems. And the political the political policeman can always find a way to find you well yes it's unique and I am one of them so since you know this is really amazing you want to go. Wolf you know want to look and been because all my artwork are not available in China that's what's up with yes. To see it but still you can tell the Chinese government can hear those noise and sit in and see in the show and on the book and they were not happy about it we were only when. They call your nonsense hot see how the fungus is some if you ask me what is the best way to fight cyber censorship what the species homes will you believe. My answer is keep working never stop you would you and will I think you know since I thought Elise's someone if you ask me what is the biggest effort I ever made to fight censorship What did I. Want to allow a city to sell so the. My answer would be I travel on a plane for more than ten hours flying from one side of one side of the planet to the other so when you come by yeah. You could go you Nuncio that was from a place where there is no freedom of speech to a place where there is so little one. And say something that I truly want to say so since it seemed the line so what is difficult about that so you can see that the funds. Go down can't walk so the difficult part is that I have to go back in two days. So you know. That's I want to end my speech with one important character so this is the value into this is a character created for the leaders. Told. Me which means approval agree I don't want to you know fabulous is that the C.E.O. that you learn in China if you want to express your own opinion. Lindahl. You need to get the approval from your leaders photo the. Fact otherwise you will get yourself into trouble so you will go to. There for I want to officially disclaiming. That you know that everything I said just now I don't agree with any of them. Thank you very much thank you very much thank you. Thank you thank you. Very intrigued interesting intriguing and the thought provoking talk and I forgot to introduce the interpreter is Mr Sharon. Ph D. candidate in the school for history and associate allergy thank you for the superior transmission skills of a wonderful job. I mean like like us there I my students and ourselves we all know the Internet censorship in China but we don't know much about details but. Has shared with us a lot of insider information and we learn a lot and I know we have a lot of questions for. Let's move first to our we have interdisciplinary. Panel before the Q. and A. First I'd like to think us three scholars professors for accepting our you might Taishan to be to serve as a panelist or for this event our first. Panelist is a professor. Her horse. Is hard to pronounce that. He's associate professor of politics at all all the stork University professor Hershel Arcot his Ph D. from University of Chicago he teaches Chinese politics Asian politics and the political development his research interests include the Chinese local government since Central Local relations in the contemporary economic etiologies So now I think it's Will it be very interesting to hear your comments or from the person that Chinese politics so now welcome Professor harshly. Thank you so much Jeanne it's a great pleasure to be here it's great pleasure to see you all and really a pleasure to hear the presentation today actually my first passion is language and I like to study language in politics I was one of those kids that used to read the dictionary when I was young so it's fascinating to see what is being done with language and today I'm going to try to speak quickly about language as power both historically and today and I'm going to play a quickly with a bunch of dualities about language and power if you go back to traditional Chinese culture civilization there was the initial distinction between what you call civilization. In power the when and the war and it was decided that to govern it was best to govern through civilization but civilization in Chinese. Is writing. Writing was critical to the exercise of power in ancient China you think of Confucianism you think of the Confucian texts you think of being able to master the texts to become a leader. Thank you. So on the one hand you had writing as power then you had. Force as Power Of course they never gave up the force when people didn't follow the writing you used to force. Second it with in writing within When they always distinguished between orthodoxy and heterodoxy So you had the john and the and they were very clear that if you had to be orthodox heterodoxy were wiped out they were silent. This to continue didn't persisted through Chinese history so never gave up use of force used it to preserve not just proper riding but Orthodox writing then of course there was a communist revolution force came back but quickly then you find that you're getting the return of when of rioting of course you get the thoughts of. Don't thought. You get the thought of the communist leaders important part of their leading is that they are the thinkers for the country most recently we have Xi Jinping thought so these things do not go away they come back so now of course we don't see heterodyne. See an orthodoxy the Chinese Communists have simplified it to correct and wrong whether thought is junk or will they like it straight forward so introducing this in a nice Marxist fashion let's have another distinction Let's bring some Marxism in and let's talk about the base and the superstructure as you know if you're good Marxists economics is the base the gene G.G. to. That is what drives history what with this we're getting the introduction of computers the Internet what do you get when you have the change of the economic base you get the change of the superstructure you get the change of classes in society what is it. Is what changes so you would expect with computers and with the Internet you're going to have changes in the superstructure well. What happens of course is. That's not what the current powers like very much they do not like this new form of communication they do not like the new options available for people and by the way I shouldn't say that there's a change in class structure China today does not recognise classes that's a dangerous word they have strata they have. So they wouldn't have class that could be too dangerous for opposition so what I very much appreciate with all these by Neris. What are you and. View of history with police shall go I what I really appreciate is that he's coming up with a form of contest station with power which is not quite orthodoxy heterodoxy what you're gay. It is as the title indicates you're getting a subversion it's a destabilizing and centering of power in the old days they would say. But he's not just reacting he's shifting the terrain shifting the terrain of the powerful and he's shifty in it by using what was the Prague of leaders when writing and reshaping it literally reshaping writing so what you're getting I love the first political cartoon he did of the shape shifter he's shifting the shape of the Chinese language and if you think of it that was the form of authority by doing that he's totally destabilizing what is supposed to be at its most powerful direct. Visible form of power I'm thinking of the words the French sociologist peer Board year who writes about language as symbolic power language as the most ultimate form of power and he says the words which construct social reality as much as they express it are the crucial stakes of political struggle which is a struggle to impose the legitimate principles of visions Chinese government would like nothing more than its categories to be accepted as presented the words it's grammar to be accepted through the language and to people work with these ideas by rewriting the characters what's supposed to be invisible becomes visible what's supposed to be natural becomes unnatural and suddenly it's like someone's giving away the magician's secrets. And the trick no longer. It's such a good trick so by changing the characters is a powerful and fundamental for. Challenging power by dissenter in that it's not a counter discourse it's questioning discourse itself add to that the whole humor of taking this vocabulary and moving. Official vocabulary and moving it into settings which totally set it off its foundations and bring into question the categories and their application and what you're finding is that you're getting I think a new form of contest station which is a content station which is not simply against but it's a form which is subversive which is shifting the terrain to destabilise power to go against power means you're going to get. You're going to get force this way you can avoid it and at the same time you can continue to persist in the challenges to power so. I'm sure that. Was very annoying and frustrating to many officials in China because they probably. Don't know what to do and they probably won the say that funny but the truth is it is funny and if you have to say it's not funny then you have to explain why it isn't funny and that's kind of like having to explain why a joke is funny but in reverse suddenly there's a joke there and everyone gets it and that tells you something ridiculous about the situation so very enlightening and inspiring a good laugh too although painful laughs recognizing the realities in China today. And I would be curious to hear as I'm sure others would be Benchley what how does one maneuver within China today love the invention of words because how would how would the scent to use locate a new lexical life form they wouldn't know to look for it. So wondering how to continue to exercise this power within China with the censorship with the great firewalls but I really appreciate being able to come and participate today thank you. Thank you so much. Professor harshly or. Thank you for your very incisive analysis of characters you know joint. But yours is symbolic of power of the language and I think it's a very stimulating for our for the audience how many how many of you are learning Chinese now. Great so that you two OK So after this talk after this event. Those who are now learning Chinese has more stronger motivation and we have a more students and a professors want to learn Chinese. So OK so now you can think about of that question. And now our next a panelist is Dr Levy. She is a senior lecturer all of Chinese language and the linguistics at Emory University Dr Lee is a linguist and a part of her research interests is contemporary Chinese character art movement. One of her popular courses at Emory is called the Chinese right hundred systems in Asia. Today she would like to share with us her research in the top. To Chinese characters in a crate creativity is from an English point of view Thank you. Thank you for the introduction Hello everyone and such a pleasure to be here to ideas with you about work. As a linguist and someone who is interested in contemporary. Art actually. I am particularly intrigued by the creation of new characters I prepared a little little talk about my thought about it please allow me to to read off the script a little bit. And they're also if you slice hopefully out to help me to illustrate I was trying to convey to you. Well I found the characters has created both comical and serious in their own ways and both you know bit of and provocative they challenge author these convey emotions tell stories and build called them called sentimental communities how do they manage to do so much this is certainly not just a linguistic question gins I could doctor do in those forthcoming article guys newly coined Chinese characters and his comic blogging article is very well the social political significance of his work but I think what is at play at a rather fundamental level is least a strong intuition about how the Chinese writing system works which is to question. So how does the Chinese writing system work and what has it got to do with our works in fact the new characters can be understood as part of a search of artworks since the late one nine hundred eighty S. that play with Chinese characters there are a number of ways such play takes place but the. Productive productive seems to be a process that can be called deconstruction reconstruction for better terms. As you well understand the Chinese writing system is different from the Roman alphabet in that each individual symbol represents in almost all cases a combination of sound meaning and form well each woman letter writing in English in almost all cases represents a combination of sound and form with no meaning so this added meaning dimension makes the Chinese script and is especially open system and essentially open system that does not set any limit on the number of characters that can be created and used the fact that one of the most comprehensive dictionaries containing. One hundred thousand characters. Character forms I should say is straightforward evidence for this point. It is also this added meaning dimension that offers artists. Artists tremendous more space to create or innovate this is not a very scientific illustration that I hop up here on the slide but when it comes to the possibility of character deconstruction you can see it could be number one through a number three and when it comes to possibility for a character reconstruction number four through a number twelve. Or so out of the twelve possibilities schematically seven of them you know all of meaning so as you can see by having this extra meaning dimension. Compare it with a running system like the room after a bit the Chinese script increases the creative possibility dramatically the meaning dimensions proviso a great number of additional ways for the characters to be constructed and reconstructed. So when they have time to look at just a few examples many if you are probably already familiar with the shootings work book from the sky. These beautiful you print it scrolls and books contain more than four thousand characters there are meaningless and soundless that the artist has created and hand carved onto movable wood blocks similar to she being a second artist I'd like to show briefly here is. So he was nonsensical Chinese characters of the ancient seal script or style in his work United Nations. What may be the most relevant to the wise work harder is Joey in today's new Chinese characters or seen hundreds of the project which the artist attempts to modernize the Chinese written assembles by creating new characters. According to tell you he the old Chinese radicals are unfit for communicating contemporary notions and need to be updated therefore he invented new radicals for such concepts as computer electron network homo sexual D.N.A.. Genetic modification digit or independence. So for instance here the radical for pollution or. Source. Appears to be a fusion of the character through a poison and gas and I don't have these two characters on here but if you can write Chinese you know what I mean. And then. This radical then combines with other existing characters. To form new characters for example when come by with show it water it means liquid pollution. Vehicle or automobile it means pollution. On the road. And so on so the new characters as a set capture the arches experience of pollution in China. Another example I can show you here is also a set of characters. In which he uses a character sure I took a person as a radical for intellectuals and this this set of characters convey his observations of various types of Chinese intellectuals today intellectuals who are cynical and aloof so-called China rotor sure fences. Who think independently. So the previous story the one on the top right corner with the person has a dot on top that according to the artist means a person who can think independently and that with the bottom part sure that means to get all together means that intellectual who can think independently. And so on. And of course you can see here. On top you see two symbols for the Chinese currency side by side and by coincidence I also use the symbol to indicate money right so intellectual who places money above everything else in this case. So why and showing she's new characters are both on apologetically a political we've seen a good number of examples so to drive this point for the home here are a couple more examples by telling T. in the next like the new character done on the left looks like a television set with the character yen speech on the screen so he represents propaganda in T.V. programs another created character. Pronounces model. Means culture as defined by the artist so as the artist explains the components sure. The Left that means do you T or God or supernatural. D.T. and then on the right. That means knife indicate the religious and violent nature of the culture. So. To conclude the linguistic harder mystic. The linguistic artistic sticks of the Chinese script makes it possible for the artist and for every one of us to create new characters however such works of creativity take much more than simply having the Chinese writing system at the disposal it also takes wisdom imagination a great sense of humor and perhaps above or else you know environment like the heavily censored Internet in China works in courage and resilience Thank you That's the thank you so much for Presently I think that's great too to situate guy's character in the bigger context of. Chinese characters contemporary art. Moment. Because as the professor said to because Chinese character has numerous possibility of a reconstruction so I would encourage the audience in this event when you go home maybe you want to curry to some new Chinese characters and then she here in the maybe we can have another new event to exhibit your work your our work how about that OK. Our last panelist days our all. Purpose. So you can see. Our panel is not counting interdisciplinary but also across institutional. We have scholars professors work and trying to use in different universities greater Atlanta and the professor Paul Foster is associate professor of the Chinese literature and a popular culture in the school of modern language is Georgia Tech he is the author of the book Our kill archaeology. Our Q R Q project to prop progeny and to the national character discourse in twentieth century China just now video you probably already has seen. Is the icon of all modern Chinese nature and makes a very exciting next semester in fall two thousand and No two thousand and nineteen. Sorry eighteen. To fall forward Professor Foster we all for a new course in the modern Chinese literature so make sure to register his course OK and that the size of the. DOCTOR fall. Research interests also include the colorful fiction martial arts film and a popular culture so welcome. And thank you Dr Leo. And I would really like to think that everybody for the opportunity here especially the guy who is given the great opportunity for all of us who are learners of Chinese language and culture to learn another few thousand characters on top of the ones we've already know and you can and your know you're looking forward to that but it's a really really good challenge here and it's really good challenge to to come here and talk to you from a very different angle from pop culture perspective Lelouch sure mentioned soon and I want to get to. Just a little bit a few words to say that but first I want to say that in pushing the boundaries of political speech in China one is always trying to be right on the edge of whatever's allowable maybe not quite stepping over or maybe pushing over a little bit a little farther and I guess the trick is trying to figure out how to gauge where you are at any particular point in time. And I cattle class have always been walking this line China's greatest twentieth century cultural critic Lewson. Author of was confronting the same type of situation in the early twentieth century. Now that Leo is a video referred to Lucian and I Q junk on the true story of our Q one my favorite stories of modern Chinese literature you can tell I wrote a whole book about it I find it refreshing to see the further analysis of the particular character that was used their job in this new these new characters that are. That the guy is creating. It was a manifestation for the rich and the powerful in contrast to the commoner Iraq you particularly like the way that I use the Chinese character for to leave to walk or to go does so with a little checkmark right next to it saying you know all you said is right you show to the way it's right to leave so. This is really appropriate in many instances so whatever the rich and the powerful say is right I guess this is what's happening but jello written with an X. X. here in the case of something is wrong go back and look at the video on youtube later after this is done and this is Lisa guys point something is wrong maybe the only recourse is for one to zero when something is wrong OK The other. The other family that was written about besides the Giles in the store true story about Q Was the one who was the other family that was it odds with Q. the commoner character was surnamed C.N.N. which twit so much I assume is what is T N MONEY So you're looking at the powerful you're looking at the rich and the money so you have to make that note this is perhaps even more direct critique of loose runs against the powers that power to be at that particular point in time and in the end immortalized through Lucian's pen as you can see in the in the book. But he also has the tragic finale Lucian writes about the Joel family and also in Diary of a mad man quantum energy in the first few lines of this diary. Well for let me say first of all this is a. Cultural critique. Of China's really caustic cultural chic of Chinese traditional culture as cannibalism in the first few lines of this of the mad Diary of a mad man. The Mad Man we learn is seeing the jolly family dog looking at him in ways that cause him some serious paranoia. OK so this mad man is kind of a metaphor as I'm looking at from a cultural pop cultural perspective for. The critic This is the person who has taken a step outside and looking without the blinders on he's a medical metaphor for the critic arguably arguably here in this case with the diary of a madman with some self knowledge like this like the author loose in. Who's clearly sees the harsh reality of the of the gel and you can read China family power structure and gets the idea that leaving that reality by going crazy. At least guys check marked. Character with the zero to leave. Maybe the maybe. B. The only way to get out. Of this conundrum. Lucian's madman however is eventually cured ironically returning to the cannibalistic sanity Chinese culture and this in a sense or stablish is the traditional orator while simultaneously highlighting the power of the establishment in the record of his diary The Diary of a bad man. Now loosens example here is really extreme cultural criticism we're talking about the teens and the twenty's and the thirty's at this time you can understand the political ramifications we're not going to go into it because we really have a lot of questions for the show itself I'm going to stop talking real soon but. The later deification of the evolution as the. As China's modern China's greatest writer and critic shows that one can exist in a state of being both critical and loyal to the culture. Itself and to the people I want to go a little farther here however and put a little more kind of pop cultural spin on this entire I Lucian and. Together from another angle to using again this character Joe to leave to go. With that checkmark there in a more balanced cultural critical perspective we have MY the other field of study which is martial arts fiction. And we find character just like Iraq who there but not with all of those negative but loveable characteristics that Accu has we have a good celebration of Chinese culture as well as the critique that we see to the character of waste. In work the deer in the cauldron looting. OK so we shall bow to put it very briefly. His best kung fu is. So. Right from the thirty six stratagems we got so. The best strategy of the thirty six there's only thirty six the is to get there scram. This stratagem. Is also the best of the Cancun that he actually possessed he was pretty pathetic but he had learned one kung fu that made him able to go and flee from his to those who were capturing him so someone modeled after this character in the negative characteristics of his otherwise positive self we shall bow. He was a pro Han. Favor of restoring the ha ha ha dynasty in this case was the Ming Dynasty and supplanting that. The man she dynasty. At the same time that he was a member of a secret society to do this he was also the best friend of the Ching Dynasty Emperor Kang's. OK So we have a conundrum another conundrum here. Is kind of the ultimate insider so to speak. He's loyal to both these power centers once again and land on the word boil. And eventually after two thousand pages of machinations in this long. Work of martial arts fiction he's able to manage this contradiction in a righteous way without selling out his countrymen. Very nice so we have a balance here with the perhaps second greatest writer or it's arguable. Top loose and top we can fight that out next semester in class. So I'm going to finish with this will have a quick couple questions on here because you know we're all. Language Learners and learning so much language from its Chinese so much culture all the time this idea of. I think you put it coded phrases social politically charged lodges thems they work to jolt the viewer out of the common daily existence. And give us all these connections back to all of the kind of the cultural things that we run into every day that we participate and we engage in in Chinese culture American culture as well. But as a student of China and Chinese language I'm intrigued by all these new characters that are socially politically charged characters here they can see in both visual graphs and phonetics in combinations that the audience distinctive social political phenomenon. Have been initially. I have to say I gave these examples from modern Chinese literature to demonstrate that scathing cultural critique such as least alkalis has been present in Chinese culture it's not been absent it's even celebrated to a great extent with. This great giant twentieth century Chinese author and it can have a happy ending and if you can call being the greatest Chinese author. Modern had better qualify it as being a happy ending which I think that any of us could aspire to would have that as a goal. In the same way it's speaking truth to power you know it's not a picnic. But it'll sure put you in some good company. And at the very end. I have to ask a question and I say I want to make sure that we get this back into the language realm. I want to know can you give us some insight into what makes those successful new words that you're inventing how you make them and maybe from a Also from a slightly different perspective in that. I'm wondering did you have any I mean it takes a lot of work to figure out this very creative endeavor that you're involved in. And I'm sure it's not every single one you come up with works you can think of some great ideas that you can put together and they just don't fit or work so as a way to get to the what makes them work so well I want I wondering if I mean we're all learning and learning and learning failing learning back again learning learning higher and higher failing learning all the way up again. And having good examples in addition to how you make the ones that work which ones might not be successful maybe give us an insight to why thank you very much for. Thank you flushing. I think a flush it has already so out of some questions so we are we are some of the transition team to our Q. and A session although that time is already tied to we how about we ask our three panel just to and also. Here to the stage and to. And and now we have can a discussion. With the R.T. stand to the panelists. And if you can state for another Let's see ten to fifteen minutes that will have to dish us Chinese dinner with the seven course waiting for you so don't rush to leave. Q So and a question. Yes OK. That's your question OK. Yes feel free to ask any question now OK. Those. OK. OK this is for Lisa I'll go far. I can see it in Chinese of hopes. But then I guess no one else knows what's going on I'll just said in English. OK So my question is because you were saying about how when there is censorship then a whole lot of Chinese netizens flock to Twitter so like why doesn't the government blog Twitter. Right like like well I don't I don't know how that works is is how people can flock to Twitter like why is the government letting that happen so I get really sad that rule in Chinese so. It's. Just like. Everyone else had a question. OK. First of all thank you again for coming here and you know welcome so when I bow like I seen your comics before so it's great to see you in person I'm not in this one six three hour comments and stuff on like M.O.P.. So wondering when I get They've always been right on these websites first thing I'm not is trying to push the conversation in a particular direction and have you noticed like an uptick of that recently I do see more and more of that these days and because of not used as kind of. Sort of subversive nature of content that can be on that site what are you afraid that sites like that might come under the purview of the Great Firewall at some point in the future. What's is I eat so this is so this is what I'll be at the. Front that was fun. I was. And how it was. How people and cares. And will most support them you know once a woman nice to woman you're like yes you can. You know. That's a woman you know the whole woman. When I mean this OK Well you know when it's a. C.E.O. done woman you know. There's a whole so that you yes touch on something neat. Where you are what sort of. Thing concept I think. You. Think. Well what to tell what do you want as open since.
