U T V When I was a little boy I spent

a lot of time with my grandmother being
that she was rife with infinite wisdom.

She never missed an opportunity to
teach me a Balliol life lesson.

I remember her telling me.

absolutely nothing but

abilities you all the world a lot.

You're in debt son.

My grandmother was a particularly saucy
individual an educator by trade and

she was the personal hero of
countless people in south Georgia.

She considered many wanted her
to live her very own child and

she held us all to some
pretty high standards.

I recalled her holding me personally
accountable and the age of seven for

not only knowing the details
behind Victor and

Nikki Newman split on The Young and
The Restless.

But also for
knowing the political implications for

a second Clinton administration.

You speak with any baby boomer who
frequents Harlem barbershop in southwest

Albany.

There were regale you with stories of
Miss Kember and her no nonsense attitude.

Because she poured everything
that she had interest students.

According to the stories I've heard
she was kind of like Morgan Freeman's

character from lean.

On me but there are no movies made or
songs written about my grandmother.

In fact should probably find it silly
that you're hearing about her today on

what would be her eighty sixth birthday.

A source of pride rested in knowing
that she was able to convince one or

two students raised in poverty
stricken southwest Georgia

that success was the only option.

This belief.

I believe that my grandmother would be
awestruck to know that at Georgia Tech.

We have hundreds even thousands of
people whose mindblowing talents and

capabilities are waiting to
be unleashed on this world.

I believe that if she were to walk
into one of our many research labs or

lecture halls or even in this very room.

She would see a reservoir of talented
individuals so much to offer the world.

I believe that she would want.

She would want for them to see what she
attempted to convey to me as a young boy

that their service to the community is the
debt that they paid for living on Earth.

My grandmother passed
away several years ago.

So she never was able to see
me start paying my debt.

I imagine that if I ever see her again
she'll want to full Ledger on not what

titles I held or honors that I received.

So I want to know about
the lives that I have impact.

So I've got some work to do.
